The quiet cityscapes of Gerard Huysman

2 min

About
Gerard Huysman (1953) was born in Zaandam and is currently living in Alphen aan den Rijn. After his education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (1973 - 1978) he started as a painter in the open air, directly after the subject. Much of his use of keys and colors of what he then developed can be seen in his later work. A large part of his oeuvre consists of cityscapes or landscapes, with the main theme being the representation of light.

He is not concerned with the buildings or architecture, but mainly with the representation of light. Sometimes bright and sometimes the sultry warm light of a summer evening or the gray-white light during a rain shower.

Realism
Everything is painted in a realistic style, with attention to details that do not interfere with the spatial nature of the performance. Striking use of color and balanced compositions are remarkable in his work. Everything is completely clear and seems to be firmly in place. The quiet atmosphere is striking, it seems as if the city sounds are silent in his paintings and the traffic has come to a halt. A city without noise. Time seems to stand still for a moment.
