The figurative paintings of John Noy

3 min

John Noy (1951) is a born and raised Utrechter. He has completed the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. He has been a visual artist for years in his hometown of Utrecht. Noy is not a conceptual artist, but is inspired by color, form and composition to create an interesting whole. The theme is man and in particular the woman in all her beauty and diversity.

The Night Watch 2.0
In July this year, his version of The Night Watch, De Nachtwacht 2.0, will be exhibited in the Rijksmuseum. Of the more than nine thousand submissions, 571 works are exhibited in the Amsterdam museum. From (children's) drawings, paintings, embroidered tapestries to sculptures. The exhibition takes place in the context of the Year of Rembrandt (1606-1669), who died 350 years ago.

Work method
Noy worked on it for ten hours a day for three months. The idea of creating his own version of The Night Watch had been with him for years. “I chose to paint my Night Watch with a palette and not with brushes. I wanted to abstract The Night Watch, not too many details. I'm not a copyist, it's my interpretation. I want to show that the Night Watch in abstract form is interesting, because it is entirely correct. You have to search for the form. All twenty-three figures and the dog on the right at the drummer are on it. I have added more color. The colors in De Nachtwacht separate the characters from the background. In fact, it is a bit too figurative. "
