The canvas frames are made of a sturdy wood type called Ayous. This type of wood is a very poor heat conductor and therefore the effect of shrinking or stretching can be reduced to a minimum. The frames are 2,2 cm thick and 7 cm wide. Our canvas frames are luxurious wooden frames with a special adjustment mechanism. Canvas has the ability to stretch or shrink when there are major changes in temperature or humidity. For that reason, a special adjustment mechanism is delivered with our canvas frames.

A navigator can be used to lead you through life. And what would a navigation device look like if there were no electronics? The message of this work is : "Keep an overview and navigate through life."

Work method
From idea to painting is an extensive and long process. When Peter gets an idea, he starts with a quick sketch, sometimes adding some notes or reflections. When the time has come to work it out to a painting, he starts drawing. Here he elaborates the proportions, the composition, the colors, etc. into a complete concept. For this painting Peter has chosen his daughter as a model. The rest has sprouted from his imagination. For the navigation machine, which was created with oil paint on canvas, he combined a number of painting techniques to achieve the contrasts he had in mind.

about the artist

Meet Peter van Oostzanen

Peter van Oostzanen

At that time it was not done to paint something that came even close to realism, but Oostzanen decided to go against the grain. He sticked to his own ideas and fantasies and developed his signature magical realism style.

‘Nothing seems impossible in Peter's world. His paintings marvel and alienate, but at the same time give you a feeling of recognisability.'
