The canvas frames are made of a sturdy wood type called Ayous. This type of wood is a very poor heat conductor and therefore the effect of shrinking or stretching can be reduced to a minimum. The frames are 2,2 cm thick and 7 cm wide. Our canvas frames are luxurious wooden frames with a special adjustment mechanism. Canvas has the ability to stretch or shrink when there are major changes in temperature or humidity. For that reason, a special adjustment mechanism is delivered with our canvas frames.

Inspiration
The inspiration for this painting arose shortly after the destruction of the painting 'Who is afraid of red and yellow and blue III' in 1986. The painting by Barnett Newman was then inaugurated at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and was destroyed by an Amsterdammer who in a state of paranoia damaged the painting with a stanleymes to show his aversion against the "plague" of abstract art. The idea of Peter was to transform the abstract painting back into a (magical) realistic painting. So the reverse way of what the abstract artists normally do.

In Peters painting is the history of 'Who is afraid of red and yellow and blue III' processed. A bird is connected to the painting with a chain, a snip. The snip was depicted on the note of 100 guldens (old Dutch currency) and was also the nickname for a 100 gulden note. This snip represents the millions of guldens that the painting ultimately cost. Next to the floating painting is a black man who screams defiantly: "I am NOT afraid of red, yellow and blue!". Behind the man is a post with a fragment of the painting 'victory boogie woogie' by Mondriaan. Barnett Newman was very inspired by Mondrian.

Work method
Peter first reads a lot about the subject and then starts to document. Then he starts sketching and drawing until he has the composition and proportions exactly as he wants them. It is based on the two above mentioned paintings and photographic material, supplemented with his own imagination. 'I'm NOT afraid of red, yellow and blue' was painted with oil on a panel in the so-called wet in wet-technique.

about the artist

Meet Peter van Oostzanen

Peter van Oostzanen

At that time it was not done to paint something that came even close to realism, but Oostzanen decided to go against the grain. He sticked to his own ideas and fantasies and developed his signature magical realism style.

‘Nothing seems impossible in Peter's world. His paintings marvel and alienate, but at the same time give you a feeling of recognisability.'
